Volleyball closes out season with four straight wins

By David McIntyre Staff Writer

The women’s volleyball team finished their season with a 3-2 win over Olivet this past Saturday. The final game of the season was senior night for two of our own: Johanna Kupe and Allison Liddane.

The Hornets dug themselves a hole by losing the first two sets 25-17, 25-21, but were able to rally and won the final three sets: 25-20, 26-24 and 15-12. This marked their fourth straight win finishing off the season 11-17 (6-10 in the MIAA).

Freshman Nya Greenstone continued to impress, as she has done all season, by leading the team in kills with 17 and tacking on 11 digs.

Kupe was among the team leaders with 10 kills and Liddane led the team with 26 digs. The stats turned in by the two seniors should not be a surprise as they were always among the team leaders in their respective categories. Kupe finished the season with 154 kills and 575 in her career. Liddane ended up with a career high 419 digs on the season and 1,039 digs in her career.

While our volleyball team was unable to make the MIAA tournament this year, there are a few reasons why we should remain optimistic. First, the Hornets were only a few wins away from qualifying for the tournament and two of their losses came in five sets. Second, the Hornets will return 13 of the total 15 players next year and nine of those women are underclassmen.

This season had its ups and downs, winning streaks and losing streaks, favorable bounces and bad calls. A tip of the hat is in order for our two seniors, Johanna Kupe and Allison Liddane. For now, it is exciting to imagine the possibilities of this young team moving forward.
