Emily Guzman Features Editor
I joined the Index because I had my heart set on being a journalist when I came to Kalamazoo College. What kept me at the Index was seeing my name published in black and white week after week. With each journalism class I took, I grew more excited about it as a career option.
College is a constant state of change and transition, so somewhere in the last three years I realized journalism isn’t the path for me. But I still write for the Index because it gives me the flexibility to do what I love—creative nonfiction writing.
Creativity is really what Features writing is all about. Maybe you don’t consider yourself a hard news journalist but you love to tell stories and entertain people with your words. At the Index, there’s room for all kinds of creative expression.
This is my call to all of you creative nonfiction and fiction writers, poets and graphic novelists, to join us at our next meeting and brainstorm how we can use your unique talents to bring more life to your student newspaper.
