StuComm Update

By Kelsey Donk Arts and Entertainment Editor

Student Commission President Bianca Rasho ’13 called this week’s meeting to order at 9:05 p.m. She welcomed guest speaker President Eric Nordmoe to remind commissioners about the reaccreditation process.

According to Nordmoe, Kalamazoo College’s 2013 self-study includes a shift in the K-Plan from the last self-study in 2003. The K-Plan now focuses on values K hopes to instill in students, rather than specific requirements students must check off a list. The study also focused on creating a more student-centered campus community.

Secretary of Finance Cameron Goodall ’15 announced a request from Kalamazoo Poetry Collective to purchase a theme for a collection of poetry the group hopes to publish online. StuComm decided to table their discussion of the budget request for the week. Goodall also proposed a budget request from the Kalamadudes to purchase a few song arrangements and new uniforms. The request from the Kalamadudes was approved.

StuComm voted to appoint commissioners Shadae Sutherland ’14 and Asia Morales ’15 to the Security Committee. Commissioner Katherine Stevens ’15 was also appointed to the Club Sports Council.

According to Homecoming Committee chair Darwin Rodriguez K’13, the Homecoming Committee met last week to discuss music options for Homecoming. The committee is deciding between three DJ performers. The committee also secured giveaways for a spirit table for homecoming weekend.

The Information Services Committee met on Monday and discussed possible improvements to the library’s search system. Information Services hopes to increase the bandwidth on campus. Commissioner Lauren Sprowl ’13 said she wishes the Internet access code could be easier to find for first-year students. Head of Information Services Committee Wyatt Smith ’14 said he would suggest this at the next meeting.

Rasho thanked first-year StuComm hopefuls for attending this week’s meeting. Commissioner Alex Werder ’13 reminded first-years that they may not chalk on brick or vertical surfaces. StuComm elections for first-year students will be this Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
