Andrew Skurka, National Geographics 2007 "Adventure of the Year" shows Saturday's audience photos of Alaska's landscape. Skurka traveled over 4,600 miles in 6 months as he hiked around Alaska;s perimeters.
He captured his emotional highs and lows by showing the pictures and videos he included in his power point. In this presentation, he showed that Alaska has “some of the best scenery in the world,” but that comes with the price of a rugged, dangerous place. In fact, he described his encounter with a grizzly bear like a Clint Eastwood scene, waiting for who’s going to draw first.
Alaska wasn’t a place where he felt comfortable or in control. While resisting nature, he realized “we are just another animal” that humans are just as vulnerable as any deer in the forests. He echoed Jack London when he said, “Nature is not your friend and nature does not care.”
The speaker ended with his new book The Ultimate Hiker’s Gear Guide, published through National Geographic. It grants advice on how to hike faster, lighter, and more efficiently so that travelers can go embark on adventures while loosening themselves from nature’s grip.
